Dr Leslie Fox

Chair of Governors

Link Governor for Outcomes, Leadership & Management

I am delighted to be joining the Education Standards Committee at Haughton Academy. I entered the teaching profession in 1979 as a second career to teach Mathematics in an International school in Cyprus and later in an Independent school near Nottingham where I was also appointed as a boarding housemaster. During this time I led a school mountaineering expedition to the then Soviet Union, coached teams to compete in the Devizes-Westminster Canoe Race and commanded the school’s cadet force. It is fair to say that I am an enthusiastic advocate of co-curricular activities.

I moved to Darlington in 1994 on appointment as Deputy Headmaster of Yarm School where I continued to take a lead in outdoor education. I believe in personal life-long learning and studied for a Masters Degree in Education, a Post Graduate Certificate in teaching Secondary Mathematics and later a Doctorate in Education through The Open University. In 1999 I was appointed as headmaster of the prestigious Assam Valley School in northeast India. On return to the UK, I continued my career heading schools in Walsall and, finally, in Middlesbrough.

I am retired now but continue to believe passionately that every young person should be given access to the best educational opportunities possible.
